People all along the eastern seaboard Friday were preparing for Hurricane Irene as the storm hit North Carolina about 1000 kilometers to the south. The usually bustling Coney Island beach in New York was nearly empty... carnival rides stood still. Patients at the Coney Island Hospital were evacuated to other facilities. Earlier, officials in New York City took the unprecedented step of ordering mandatory evacuations of people living along the coast. Meteorologists say they expect the storm to weaken as it travels up the coast. President Obama, who returned to Washington a day early from his family vacation, called on residents to take the calls for evacuation and preparedness, seriously. Julie Noce, Reuters
