Amateur video out of Syria shows people packing the streets of Homs. The night time video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows people calling for the end of President Bashar al-Assad's rule. Five months of protests have failed to unseat Assad, who inherited power from his father and retains the loyalty of the core of his armed forces. But demonstrators in Syria been encouraged by the fall of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi. More nighttime footage, purportedly out of Hama, shows demonstrators dancing in the streets singing songs against the regime. Syrian authorities have expelled foreign media making it difficult to verify events in the country. Day time footage shows more people back on the street. The United Nations says more than 2,000 civilians have been killed since protests began in March. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters.
