Thousands of females in China flocked to Shanghai to overcome the obstacles of dating. For one thing, the three women to two men ratio is not in their favor. But the President of Shanghai's Matchmaking Association Zhou Juemin attempts to explain why the number of unmarried women in China has increased in the last decade. (SOUNDBITE) Zhou Juemin, President of Shanghai's Matchmaking Association, saying (Mandarin): "These days, girls are much more self-sufficient and independent. Also, there's a lot of work pressure in society nowadays so many girls are busy with their jobs and perhaps tend to consider career advancement above marriage - so some of them are no longer young." So where does this leave the competition? Right here at the eastern city's largest matchmaking party, where singletons ages 25 to 35 scoped out potential mates. Many men, like Li Jianxun, said they were willing to shrug off traditional thinking that says men can't marry women of higher educational and living standards. (SOUNDBITE) Li Jianxun, 27-year-old participant, saying (Mandarin): "As long as the feelings are mutual, it is still possible to interact and get to know each other, to find out if the other person is suitable." Organizers say 6,000 women and 4,000 men signed up for the event. And with participant numbers at its highest, more options may mean finding the perfect mate. Kilmeny Duchardt, Reuters.
