Amateur video out of Syria shows people on the streets of Homs with an effigy of President Bashar al-Assad. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, comes as The United Nations top human rights forum strongly condemned Syria Friday for "gross and systematic" violations by its forces. More footage, purportedly from north eastern Syria shows demonstrators back on the street calling for the international community to help set up a buffer zone in the country that would protect the pro-democracy movement from the Syrian regime's forces. The United Nations says more than 4,000 people have been killed, including 307 children, since the uprising began in March. Syria has called the latest UN criticism biased. On Friday, demonstrators took to the streets across the country. The United States, the European Union, members of the Arab League and neighboring Turkey have already imposed sanctions on Syria over Assad's failure to withdraw tanks and troops from restive cities, and start talks with his opponents. Russia and China, which both have oil projects in Syria, have warned against foreign interference in Syria in the name of human rights. Syria has banned most independent media from the country, making it difficult to verify accounts from activists or the government. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
