Clinton: Syria must remove Assad, pursue rule of law

Amateur video out of Syria shows a funeral service in Homs. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters. shows thousands filling the streets calling for an end to President Bashar al Assad's regime. Against this backdrop U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Syrian Opposition leaders in Geneva, where she said a democratic transition mean more than removing a president. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying (English): "Because obviously a democratic transition includes more than removing the Assad regime. It means setting Syria on the path of the rule of law and protecting the universal rights of all citizens regardless of sect or ethnicity or gender." She praised the work of activists U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying (English): "I think Syrians both in exile and inside Syria are behaving with great courage and commitment and are inspired and motivated by the aspirations of freedom and democracy that are sweeping the Arab world. So I look forward to hearing from each of you in our time together this afternoon. Thank you." The United Nations says more than 4,000 people have died since protests broke out in March. Syrian authorities say they are fighting foreign-backed "terrorist groups" trying to spark civil war who have killed some 1,100 soldiers and police since March. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
