Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin registers his bid to become president. Putin, who already served two terms as president from 2000 until 2008, submitted documents for registration as a presidential candidate ahead of elections due in March. The process comes just days after Sunday's parliamentary elections that saw Putin's ruling United Russia party suffer a significant setback but hold on to its majority in the lower house. Thousands have taken to the streets in protest at the results, saying that the elections were rigged. Hundreds of demonstrators have since been detained. The result was the biggest electoral setback for Putin since he rose to power in 1999. Still, members of the opposition say the result was inflated by fraud and manipulations including stuffing ballot boxes. Simon Hanna, Reuters.
