ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Mexican troops seized a record 15 tonnes of pure methamphetamine in the Jalisco state capital of Guadalajara in what authorities call the largest seizure of its kind. The drugs were found February 7 on a ranch in the municipality of Tlajomulco de Zuniga, close to Guadalajara, Mexico's western second-largest city. Authorities said the haul could have supplied 13 million doses worth more than $4 billion on the U.S. street market. Together with the meth, troops also seized five kilograms of crystal meth, 4,575 litres of precursor chemicals used to make synthetic drugs as well as barrels of white and yellow powder in a laboratory as well as a vehicle. The army confirmed the seizure was the biggest single haul of such drugs. With no arrests announced and Jalisco state a prime drug-trafficking region, authorities have yet to determine the owners of the drug lab. However, the region is the traditional stamping ground for the country's most wanted cartel chief, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman for the Sinaloa gang. President Felipe Calderon's conservative administration has been dominated by a military crackdown on drug cartels, which has claimed more than 50,000 lives over the past five years.
