Samba school winner announced

Feb. 23 - Carnival officials crown samba school Unidos da Tijuca the winner of Rio de Janeiro’s 2012 samba parade competition. Tara Cleary reports.

PLEASE NOTE THIS EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL What Brazils' samba schools have worked all year for: the reward of being crowned the top troupe in Rio de Janeiro's carnival parades. This year the top prize went to Unidos da Tijuca. The samba troupe recreated the story of Brazilian singer and composer Luiz Gonzaga, who would have turned 100 this year. And President of the school, Fernando Horta, says spectator expectations increase every year. SOUNDBITE: Fernando Horta, President of Unidos da Tijuca samba school, saying (Portuguese): "The samba school's responsibility gets bigger every year. This year we presented a huge spectacle. I hope the audience and the press are happy with the work that we did this year." The top six samba schools will parade in the Sambadrome again on February 25th. Tara Cleary, Reuters.
