Suu Kyi gets Freedom of Dublin

June 19 - Myanmar's pro-democracy leader is awarded the Freedom of the City in Dublin 12 years after her son collected it on her behalf. Paul Chapman reports.

Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's been given a hero's welcome in Dublin. The Irish capital finally awarded her the Freedom of the City in person, more than a decade after her son received the honour on her behalf. SOUNDBITE: DUBLIN MAYOR TIM SBRANTI SAYING (English): "On that day he said ' I hope some day circumstances in Burma will allow my mother to come to Ireland to accept this honour herself. Daw (Aung San) Suu (Kyi), that day is today." Suu Kyi, who was in Dublin as part of a tour of Europe, said her visit to the city would be among the most memorable. SOUNDBITE: AUNG SAN SUU KYI SAYING (English): "This will be one of the unforgettable days of my life. I have been welcomed to Ireland as though I belong to you and for that I thank you with all my heart. You've stood by us in our times of trouble. These troubles are not all over yet and I'm confident that you will continue to stand with us." Burmese-born people living in Ireland turned out in force for a glimpse of the newly-freed political prisoner. Some had driven six hours to get there. SOUNDBITE: WILMA HGUR, BURMESE-BORN RESIDENT OF IRELAND, SAYING (English): "She is a real leader. I'm happy. I love her too much." SOUNDBITE: AUNG SAN PHYO, BURMESE-BORN RESIDENT OF IRELAND, SAYING (English): "I feel like crying, you know? It's a happy day for us, very happy." Suu Kyi, who got a chorus of 'Happy Birthday' from the crowd a day before she turned 67 on Tuesday, later headed on to the UK. She's due to wrap up her European tour with a visit to France.
