Turkish, Syrian forces seek downed Turkish jet

June 23 - A joint Turkish-Syrian search and rescue operation is underway as the father of one missing pilot awaits any news about his son. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

The search is on for Turkish airmen shot down by Syrian forces over the Mediterranean. Turkish and Syrian forces are conducting joint investigations. Signals from both sides suggest that neither want a military confrontation over the incident. Ali Ertan, the father of one missing pilot is still awaiting news. (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) FATHER OF MISSING PILOT, ALI ERTAN, SAYING: "Nobody briefed us. Officials are here with us, but we don't know what's happening at the higher level." While the joint search operation is going forward, it will clearly sit uneasily with both forces, given the bitter hostility between the two former allies over Assad's 16-month-old crackdown on opponents.
