At least 19 people died after Kurdish rebels attacked a military outpost in southeastern Turkey. Sources say six Turkish soldiers, two state militiamen and 11 Kurdish militants were killed. More than 20 were wounded in the attacks. Clashes between the military and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have intensified in recent weeks in a conflict that has dragged on for 28 years and claimed 40,000 mainly Kurdish lives. Some Turkish analysts warn of a widening conflict after Kurds in northern Syria, assert themselves amid a power vacuum as President Bashar al-Assad's troops crack down on rebels elsewhere in the country.
