British boy band One Direction was the big winner at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, edging out Rihanna and taking home three prizes to crown their arrival on the U.S. pop scene just six months ago. The five guys bested Justin Bieber and Rihanna for best pop video, and fellow all-boy British outfit The Wanted as best new artists. They also performed their latest release "One Thing" to hordes of screaming girls at the two-hour Los Angeles ceremony. Rihanna, who hit the stage to perform two songs, came away with just one award. The Toronto film festival opened on Thursday and all eyes were on "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart who attracted the biggest buzz at the star-studded festival scattered with Oscar hopefuls. Stewart wowed on the red carpet, for her film "On the Road," signing autographs to streams of cheering fans in her first media appearance since issuing an unusual public apology for cheating on long-term boyfriend and "Twilight" co-star Robert Pattinson with British film director Rupert Sanders. "Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler and her actor husband, Will Arnett, have split after nine years of marriage. The pair, who often appeared together on screen, have two young sons. Arnett is known for his roles on TV series including "Arrested Development" and "Up All Night." Russian opposition punk band Pussy Riot have released a new video in which they set fire to a portrait of President Vladimir Putin in a stunt likely to anger the Kremlin. Last month, three of the band's members given two-year jail sentences after storming the altar of Moscow's main cathedral and staging a "punk prayer." Clips from the new video were shot in recent days in response to an MTV request ahead of MTV's Video Music Awards in Los Angeles which took place on Thursday.
