Lance Armstrong has resigned from the board of the Livestrong foundation amidst the controversy surrounding his career as a professional cyclist. A spokesperson for the foundation, a cancer-supporting charity that Armstrong founded in 1997, says he stepped down to spare the organization any negative criticism. Last month Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles after failing to fight charges that he used performance enhancing drugs. A report by the United States Anti-Doping Agency said the now retired Armstrong was involved in the most sophisticated and successful doping ring in history. Armstrong has continued to maintain he has never used performance enhancing drugs. A spokesperson for the charity says Armstrong will continue to be involved in the charity, just not as a board member.
