Italian marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone leave India in a flurry of tight security.
The sailors are being allowed home for Christmas as long they return to India to face trial over the killing two Indian fishermen.
Until now the pair have been on bail but not permitted to leave the country.
They are due back on January 10th.
The two men were members of a military security team protecting the cargo ship Enrica Lexie.
They shot the fishermen off the coast of Kerala, saying they mistook the men for pirates.
Italy says the shooting happened in international waters and wants the marines tried in Rome.
India says the unarmed fishermen were killed in an area where Indian law applies.
