Outraged by the public rape of a young woman, protesters in New Delhi continue their cries for justice. Some lay under police vehicles as security authorities tried to disband the protests outside the city's India Gate monument. The 23-year-old medical student is fighting for her life in a hospital after she was gang raped on a bus and thrown from the vehicle a week ago. Protesters are demanding quick action against the six suspects arrested, with some calling for the death penalty. Head of the ruling Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, spoke to demonstrators and promised a fast-track trial to bring the perpetrators to justice. But some were not satisfied with Gandhi's response and called for much more to be done to curb violence against women. (SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) A DEMONSTRATOR, PALLAVI, SAYING: "This (rape) has not happened for the first time, and will happen again. It took so many of us to persuade her to come out of her house. Do you think she would have come out or let us enter if just five or six girls had been present? We would never have been entertained." According to crime records, New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among Indian cities, with one woman raped every 20 minutes.
