U.S., Germany warn Russia not to deliver arms to Syria

May 31 - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned Moscow that arming President Bashar al-Assad's forces would jeopardize international peace efforts regarding Syria. Deborah Gembara reports.

Tank fire in Salma Syria --- just one of several cities where fighting between government forces and the opposition continues to be fierce, according to this latest video posted to a social media website. Thousands of miles away in Washington, discussion about Syria's future centered on what role Moscow should play as western powers seek to bring both sides to a conference. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. SOUNDBITE: German Foreign Affairs Minister Guido Westerwelle saying: " I would like to make this absolutely clear- we tell our Russian colleagues - don't endanger the conference in Geneva." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry echoed the warning to Russia not to make good on its plans to deliver new surface to air missiles to Damascus. SOUNDBITE: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry saying: "We ask them again not to upset the balance within the region, with respect to Israel and the weaponry that is being provided to Assad, whether it's an old contract or not...it does put Israel at risk." The U.S. and Germany worry that shoring up Assad's forces could plunge Syria's civil war into an all-out regional war with no end in sight.
