Syrian rebels battle forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean Sunday. The Syrian Observatory for human rights says at least 30 people were killed in the fighting, as battle rage across the country. More footage, which can not be independently verified, appears to show a tank opening fire at government forces in Aleppo. Assad, with support from Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, has gained ground in recent months. Rebel fighters may be backed by regional Sunni Muslim powers but remain largely outgunned by Assad's s army. The civil war in Syria erupted after mainly peaceful protests against Assad rule were put down with force. In the early months of the conflict Assad's forces were blamed for the documented human rights abuses -- but a U.N. review now says both sides have committed atrocities.
