Militants were holed up at the base on Thursday after attacking a nearby police station. Police said they hijacked two vehicles to get from there to the military base. At least eight people have been killed. The attack happened as the prime ministers of India and Pakistan were due to meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. Violence in the disputed Kashmir region was expected to be on the agenda. Some defence analysts in India say talks now will show India to be soft. (SOUNDBITE)(English) BHARAT VERMA, A DEFENCE EXPERT, SAYING: "The talk is not going to work. You need to have a carrot and stick policy, and so many attacks on India are happening, and now with this attack even now if the prime minister wants to talk with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, it is not just a waste of time, it will only send a signal that no matter what you do, India will not use danda (stick), India will only dialogue, India is a soft state." Jammu and Kashmir's chief minister says the gunmen crossed into India from Pakistan a day earlier. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHIEF OF INDIA'S NORTHERN JAMMU AND KASHMIR STATE, OMAR ABDULLAH, SAYING: "The aim of these terrorists is to derail the proposed dialogue between the Prime Minister of India and the Prime Minister of Pakistan." There's been an insurgency in India's part of Muslim Kashmir since 1989. India has long accused Pakistan of supporting militants in their fight against its rule.
