It's a story everyone is talking about. Dubbed the "blonde angel" in Greek media -- A mystery 4-year-old girl living with a couple in the Roma community in the small Greek town of Farsala. The discovery of the girl, known as Maria, has prompted authorities to try to find out who she is and where she came from. The story has left the Roma community distraught. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) PRESIDENT OF ROMA COMMUNITY IN FARSALA, CHARALAMBOS DIMITRIOU, SAYING: "Their children are crying all the time. They are crying over Maria and their mother and their father. They are constantly crying." DNA tests have shown Maria was not born to the Romas. One unnamed Roma woman says this is normal. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) UNNAMED ROMA WOMAN, SAYING: "The child was just fine here. Sure, she bought it. Children are bought for adoption. If someone does not have children that is what is done. This woman took this child to raise her. The mother that sold her... maybe she was poor, had problems, and she wanted to give it to a good family." In town, residents are shocked. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) FARSALA RESIDENT GRIGORIS NIOKAS, SAYING: "I used to see the mother often. She would come to the square here to beg with the child. At one point I asked her how she got such a blonde angel. She told me she conceived it with a blonde man. It was a cute child. But what can we say? Who can interfere in such things? We didn't know. How could we know what was going on?" Officials are holding the couple under charges of abduction and procuring false documents. Some of the documents reportedly suggest the couple has up to 14 children, but six are registered as having been born within less than 10 months.
