NYC, London, DC remember Mandela

Dec. 6 - Residents in cities around the world remember Nelson Mandela. Julie Noce reports.

People in cities around the world are remembering Nelson Mandela after he died overnight Thursday. In Brooklyn New York, diners at the Madiba restaurant pay tribute to the former South African president. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MUMCY GOUTA MPELEGE, SAYING: "For him to have gone through all that and still embrace forgiveness instead of revenge, that really to me meant something really big." Later, patrons released lanterns and sang songs in his honour. In London's Parliament Square, people laid flowers in front of a statue of Mandela. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LONDON RESIDENT, HAROLD WILSON-BONXU, SAYING: "This man will never be forgotten - everything that he's done for the world. He's always going to be remembered and his legacy is going to live forever." (SOUNDBITE) (English) LONDON RESIDENT, PAULINE SMITH, SAYING: "A great loss, I mean world leaders have been influenced by him, his people have been influenced by him." Flowers were also laid at the embassy of South Africa in Washington DC. Mandela died at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was 95.
