Praise for diplomat in India-US row

Jan. 10 - The father of the Indian diplomat at the centre of a major rift between India and the U.S. praises her and New Delhi government. Paul Chapman reports.

PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT WAS ORIGINALLY 4:3 The diplomat at the centre of a row between India and the U.S. is taking up a new role back in India after U.S formally indicted her for visa fraud on Thursday. Devyani Khobragade was also accused of lying about underpaying a domestic worker. Khobragade, who was deputy consul-general in New York, was given diplomatic immunity and told to leave the country. Her father says all charges against her should be dropped. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UTTAM KHOBRAGADE, FATHER OF INDIAN DIPLOMAT DEVYANI KHOBRAGADE, SAYING: "(The) Indian parliament is aware that the charges were false and I'm confident the government will continue efforts to compel U.S.A for dropping the charges." And he's praising the Indian government, people and media for backing Khobragade. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UTTAM KHOBRAGADE, FATHER OF INDIAN DIPLOMAT DEVYANI KHOBRAGADE, SAYING: "This whole crisis was created by the U.S. administration so if at all it has some effect on the India-U.S. relations, it is their choice. As far as the Indian government (is concerned), the Indian government has...I have every appreciation, I'm extremely grateful to the Indian government. They did whatever the could have done and I'm confident they will continue to do what they feel necessary to do." Khobragade's arrest ignited protests in India after it emerged she was hand-cuffed and strip searched. India's foreign ministry confirmed on Friday she'd left the U.S and was being transferred to a post in New Delhi
