ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Former French first lady Valerie Trierweiler met poor children in Mumbai Tuesday as a part of her humanitarian work in her first visit after a highly publicized separation with President Francois Hollande. The 48-year-old journalist traveled to India on Sunday (January 26) in honor of an anti-hunger charity - Fight Hunger Foundation. She walked through a sprawling Mumbai slum and spoke to several children, holding some in her lap, as she took a first hand look at one of the most impoverished regions of India's financial capital. Statistics from various development agencies highlight increasing number of underweight children and stunted growth among children along with poor nutrition among women, high maternal mortality rates and incidences of non-communicable diseases in India. According to the World Bank, the prevalence of malnutrition among children in India is among the highest in the world. Last year also, when the former first lady visited India accompanied by Hollande, she had gone to a shelter for street children in New Delhi and had said that she wished to fight for the rights of children. Before embarking on her Indian trip Trierweiler was treated in a hospital for a week after Closer magazine published an article alleging Hollande's involvement with 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet. After her release from the hospital she had since then been holed up in a presidential retreat outside Paris. Hollande announced his separation from Trierweiler on Saturday (January 25) following a media storm over allegations he is having an affair with an actress.
