Russia's embassy in Kiev comes under a hail of missiles as protesters vent their anger against Moscow's backing of separatist rebels in east Ukraine. They hurled bricks, stones and eggs at the building. Some witnesses said the Russian flag was ripped up. Several cars which appeared to belong to the embassy were overturned and a metal gate was damaged. There was no attempt by Ukrainian police to intervene. The assault came as Ukraine's president promised tough action against pro-Russian rebels who shot down an army transport plane on Saturday. All 49 servicemen on board were killed. The plane was hit by an anti-aircraft missile at it came in to land at Luhansk airport near the Russian border. It's the biggest toll suffered by Ukraine's government in a single incident since the conflict began. A day of mourning's been announced. The violence comes as talks continue ahead of Monday's deadline for Russia to cut off Ukraine's gas supplies. The European Energy Commissioner said there were signs of progress. (SOUNDBITE)(English) EUROPEAN ENERGY COMMISSIONER GUENTER OETTINGER SAYING: "We have a time limit up to Monday morning and so it's good to have a meeting this evening and maybe tomorrow, and we're willing to use the time here in Kiev." Russia's demanding payment of a 1.95 billion dollar gas bill in a long-running dispute, part of a broader crisis since Moscow's annexation of Crimea in March.
