Traditional music in the Bavarian town of Abensberg introduces an extremely important contest - to see who can carry the most 1-liter or 33-ounce beer mugs at once. They're called Masskrug in German and, when filled, they each weigh 2.3 kilograms or 5 pounds. First off was Oliver Struempfel who has worked in this beer tent for the past 17 years. He managed 21 mugs. His opponent topped that with 26 beer glasses. But not to be outdone, Struempfel countered with a new world record, successfully carrying 27 beer mugs over the 40-meter or 43-yard distance. SOUNDBITE: Oliver Struempfel, world record holder in beer mug carrying, saying (German): "Twenty-six was my personal best, which is more than 60 kilograms and so it's no longer enough to just carry the mugs, you have to support the training in the gym, especially in winter when you don't get much time carrying the beer mugs." And after lugging nearly 140 pounds-worth of beer, hopefully Struempfel got to savor some of the ice cold suds.
