The sound of gunfire as Syrian insurgents congratulate each other as they claim to take a Syrian Army base in Deraa. The video, which can not be independently verified by Reuters, appears to show Islamic Front forces engaged in fierce fighting Sunday to capture the army base. The base, one of several used to pound rebel-held villages and towns in southern Syria, lies at the heart of a heavily fortified zone, which has formed a southern line of defense protecting the capital, Damascus. Fighters from the Two Holy Mosques Brigade join the battle, taking aim at what is said to be a Syrian plane -- another battle in a war that has already killed more than 200,000 people. As rebels celebrate their victory, they tear down a bust of Hafez al-Assad -- the father of Syria's President. The south is the last major stronghold of the mainstream, anti-Assad opposition, who have been weakened elsewhere by the expansion of the ultra-hardline Islamic State group in the east and north, and gains by the Nusra Front in the northwest.
