Lebanon gets massive weapons shipment from U.S.

The U.S. delivers $25 million worth of weapons and ammunition to the Lebanese army, which the U.S. ambassador says will be used to ''defeat terrorism and extremism''. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Twenty-five million dollars worth of weapons and ammunition arrives in Lebanon from the U.S. The shipment to the Lebanese Army includes 70 M198 Howitzers and 26 million rounds of ammunition... ... intended to help it fight jihadist groups which have repeatedly battled with security forces near the Syrian border. U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, David Hale, was on hand to oversee the delivery at Beirut port. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AMBASSADOR TO LEBANON, DAVID HALE, SAYING: "This is top of the line equipment, this is the best that there is on the marketplace, it is what our soldiers use and I know that in matter of days is going to be what your brave soldiers are using in the battle to defeat terrorism and extremism that is pouring across the borders from Syria." The U.S. has provided the Lebanese army with more than $1 billion in military aid since 2006... ...and it was the fifth largest recipient of U.S. foreign military funding in 2014.
