Beija-Flor samba school wins Rio’s Carnival parade competition

Beija-Flor is crowned Rio de Janeiro's champion samba school as the Carnival comes to a close in the city. Tara Cleary reports.

Members of Rio de Janeiro's 12 elite Grupo Especial samba schools cheer as the parade competition results are read out. The mainstay of the Rio's Carnival, the parade contest, is the most competitive in the country. And the winner for the 13th time was Beija-Flor. President of the school, Farid Abraao says it was a technical parade. SOUNDBITE: Farid Abraao, president of Beija-Flor, saying (Portuguese): "Well, we think we had a great Carnival. We saw a lot of issues. The school had a performance that was what I would call, not perfect, but almost perfect." Beija-Flor was founded in 1948 and this year paraded 3,700 participants in its procession.
