Paris shows off cash cows at agricultural show

Thousands of animals are herded into Paris' exhibition centre for the city's annual agriculture show. Elly Park reports.

While humans are groomed to perfection to showcase the latest creations by renowned designers at London Fashion Week, across the pond in Paris cows are getting readied for their big show. Livestock of all shapes and sizes arrived at the French capital for the annual International Agriculture show where over 3,000 animals are scheduled to go on display. And every farmer wants their animals to look their best in order to stay ahead of the pack, says prep staff Alexandre Gala. SOUNDBITE: Prep Staff at Farm Show, Alexandre Gala, saying (French) "It's a bit like Miss France. The Miss France contestants, they're beautiful. And we try to have beautiful cows and to make them more beautiful." The country is proud of its pastoral history, and this animal is especially dear to the French, explains Antonio Duarte of poultry club Vorwerk. SOUNDBITE: President of the Club Francais De La Vorwerk, Antonio Duarte, saying (French) "Behind me we have a golden rooster, a Gaulois golden rooster, which is the symbolic rooster of France. This is the rooster we see on all the rugby fields and on rugby teams' flags. It's the symbol of France." Over 1,000 exhibitors from 40 different countries are scheduled to show off agriculture in all its diversity until March 1.
