Stunned, thousands of Russians are laying flowers and lighting candles on this Moscow bridge ... where opposition politician Boris Nemtsov was gunned down late Friday night. The vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin was due to lead a march on Sunday against the war in Ukraine as well as Kremlin policies on the economy ... but organizers say they've canceled the event. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN OPPOSITION ACTIVIST, ONE OF ORGANIZERS OF ANTI-WAR MARCH, LEONID VOLKOV, SAYING: "A positive march with flags and balloons - it doesn't fit this tragic moment and the magnitude of Nemtsov's persona, as well as the magnitude of the red line which we have now crossed." 55-year-old Nemtsov was shot four times in the back by killers in a white car just meters from the red walls of the Kremlin. Russia's Investigative Committee, which answers to Putin, says it's following several leads ... including that idea that the opposition ordered the killing to rally support for Sunday's march. Putin condemned the murder of Nemtsov -- who was briefly deputy prime minister --..but also called it a "provocation". Near the Kremlin, one Muscovite agrees…. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MOSCOW RESIDENT, DENIS, SAYING: "The authorities definitely do not benefit from this. Everybody has long forgotten about this man, Nemtsov. He was an irrelevant figure, especially for the regions. It is definitely a provocation." In St. Petersburg ... more tributes … as opposition activists gather for a spontaneous rally to mourn the Kremlin critic. The man whose murder showed the risks of speaking out against Putin in a Russia that the opposition says is looking darker and darker.
