ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was inducted into the Irish America Hall of Fame on Monday (March 16) in New York. Hillary Clinton, a likely 2016 White House candidate, does not have Irish ancestry. She was instead being honored for her work in the Irish peace process. During her speech, Clinton spoke about her and her husband President Bill Clinton's efforts to bring peace to Europe's long-running war. "I remember very well when the request came, back in 1993, that my husband approve a visa for Gerry Adams who is with us today. Nobody in the government would approve it," she said. "And it was a very difficult decision. It seems like an obvious one in retrospect. But at the time, much of our own government, certainly other governments, were against such a gesture. And I think it is true that absent that first step, that first risk, we might not have had the momentum to move forward to get to the Good Friday Accords and all that has followed." Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams was granted a visa and came to the U.S. in January 1994. Adams was seated at the same table as Clinton at Monday's ceremony. While in Belfast during the 90's, Mrs. Clinton met with working class women from both sides of the conflict. She brought the women together during her Vital Voices meetings and worked to make their voices heard. In Northern Ireland, Clinton met with Joyce McCartan, a Protestant women who was married to a Catholic. McCartan's son and 17 of her extended family members died in the Troubles. Clinton also met with Inez McCormack, a human rights activist. Clinton said she accepted her award on behalf of all the women she met in Northern Ireland, including McCartan and McCormack. Mrs. Clinton is Democrats' presumed front-runner for the party's 2016 presidential nominee. She recently has come under fire for her use of a non-government email while working as secretary of state under President Barack Obama.
