Texas Senator Ted Cruz confirmed his presidential bid on Twitter early on Monday. He's the first major figure from his party to announce plans to seek the Republican nomination. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 and has built a reputation as an unyielding advocate for conservative principles. As a presidential candidate, he is likely to portray himself as the most reliable proponent of small government. More than a dozen possible candidates are already courting donors and voters in states like Iowa and New Hampshire that will vote early in next year's primary season. None of them are expected to enter the race formally until April at the earliest to maximize their advantage under campaign finance laws.
