Rahm Emanuel won a second term in office Tuesday (April 7) in a hard-fought battle against two democrats for the title of Chicago Mayor. (SOUNDBITE) (English) RAHM EMANUEL, CHICAGO MAYOR, SAYING: "I have had the good fortune to serve two presidents. I've had the fortune of being elected to congress. Being Mayor of the city of Chicago is the greatest job I've ever had and the greatest job in the world." During his campaign, 55-year-old Emanuel spent millions of dollars on television and radio ads where he acknowledged his abrasive nature. But Chicagoans gave him a second chance at the ballot box. His opponent, 58-year-old Jesus "Chuy" Garcia is also a democrat. Their non-partisan race became a symbol for a national divide between the party's moderates and the less well-funded progressive wing. Chicago's budget gap is projected to grow to $1.2 billion dollars next year which could force Mayor Emmanual to raise property taxes or cut school funding.
