Kurdish forces open fire in Syria, targeting Islamic State. Amateur video which can not be independently verified by Reuters appears to show fierce fighting in northeastern Syria. Kurdish forces later take control of a town -- a key victory which opens the road for its forces to advance towards the Islamic State's stronghold in Raqqa province. Kurdish fighters from the YPG supported by U.S.-led air strikes, have been making steady gains this month against Islamic State in the northeast. The Syrian military has also captured territory from IS in the same region. The YPG has emerged as the only notable partner on the ground for the U.S.-led alliance bombing Islamic State in Syria. The U.S. has rejected the idea of partnering with President Bashar al-Assad, saying he is part of the problem.
