New Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on parade just after taking the oath of office. His first target -- Boko Haram -- as he promises to eradicate the "mindless, godless" militants. And now high hopes for the future. In Abuja, giddy streets scenes, amid the air of celebrations. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ABUJA RESIDENT, ABIMBOLA LANIYAN, SAYING: "I feel so elated. Nigeria has a new opportunity and a new beginning with an honest man who is serious and focused and determined." In northern Nigeria animals are gathered for slaughter ahead of a feast to celebrate the new president. Street sellers have new wares now offering portraits of the new president. And for those watching the new President -- hope. (SOUNDBITE) (Hausa) KADUNA RESIDENT, SHUAIBU USMAN, SAYING: "There is a power failure. We are not surprised. Various regimes have promised to fix the electricity problem, and millions and trillions have gone into the projects to no avail. That is why we voted for Muhammadu Buhari because he keeps his promises, and we are certain he will fix the problem." The election marks a remarkable political turn-around for Buhari, who has gone from military dictator in the mid-1980s to a born-again democrat-- swept to power on the back of a landslide victory at the ballot box in March.
