Tsipras pledges reform to European parliament as deadline looms for debt deal. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Applause from allies on the left, but also from far-right nationalists as Alexis Tsipras strides into the European Parliament Wednesday. The Greek prime minister is full of promise. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) GREEK PRIME MINISTER, ALEXIS TSIPRAS, SAYING: "Let me assure the house that, quite apart from the crisis, we will continue with our reform undertakings." While offering few specifics on a new program to be presented Thursday he acknowledges the need for change. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) GREEK PRIME MINISTER, ALEXIS TSIPRAS, SAYING: "Indeed there are things in Greece's past that are not right and must be abolished. For example - early retirements." He says a program needs to be viable. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) GREEK PRIME MINISTER, ALEXIS TSIPRAS, SAYING: "We want a sustainable program, because we want to be in the position to repay the loans that we've accepted. And when we ask to reduce the debt, we are asking for that because we want to be able to pay this back. We don't want to be forced time and time again to accept new loans to pay off the old ones." If experts from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund, the so-called Troika, deem the Greek proposals viable, euro zone finance ministers will meet Saturday to recommend opening negotiations with Athens, and a special summit of the 28-nation EU would meet on Sunday to approve an aid plan.
