STORY: Pope Francis arrived in the landlocked South American nation of Paraguay on Friday (July 10), on his sixth day of an eight-day tour of some of South America's poorest nations. The pope was welcomed at Asuncion's airport by President Horacio Cartes, with whom he will hold a private meeting later in the evening. A girls' choir sang to the pope in Spanish, and the indigenous languages of Guarani and Ache while dancers performed traditional folk dances for the pontiff. Latin America's first pope arrived in Ecuador on Sunday (July 5) and then traveled to Bolivia before arriving in Paraguay for the last stop of what is being called his "homecoming" trip. In Paraguay, he will visit a children's hospital, tour poor neighborhoods and celebrate two Masses, including one in the city of Caacupe, better known as the site of the Virgin of Caacupe. Pope Francis on Thursday (July 9) urged the downtrodden to change the world economic order, denouncing a "new colonialism" by agencies that impose austerity programs and calling for the poor to have the "sacred rights" of labor, lodging and land. In one of the longest, most passionate and sweeping speeches of his pontificate, the Argentine-born pope also asked forgiveness for the sins committed by the Roman Catholic Church in its treatment of native Americans during what he called the "so-called conquest of America." Although not the Argentine-born pontiff's first trip to South America, it is the first self-designed trip this pope has taken to his home continent since assuming office in 2013.
