Heavy shelling and air strikes are pounding Syria's northwest... during an advance that the Syrian army says has helped them recapture four villages. The assault left behind smoldering ruins during a brutal counter-attack. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the government launched more than 100 air strikes on parts of the Sahl al-Ghab plain. The rebels had been threatening strongholds of President Bashar al-Assad, forcing the army to retreat to new defensive lines. The four-year-long war has gathered pace recently, intensifying on major frontlines and adding more deaths to the estimated quarter of a million people killed during the conflict.
