A boat carrying human rights lawyer Amal Clooney pulls up to the island of Maafushi... ...en route to visit jailed former Maldives president, Mohamed Nasheed. The first democratically-elected leader in this Indian Ocean tropical nation was ousted in 2012 and convicted of terrorism -- for ordering the arrest of a judge. Critics of his arrest, including the U.N., say Nasheed wasn't granted due process, and that the case against him was politically motivated. Now, Clooney -- wife of actor George Clooney -- is working to secure his release. At a news conference, she warned of stepped-up pressure on the government. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER, AMAL CLOONEY, SAYING: "The next stage will be to pursue targeted sanctions, travel bans and any other action and recourse that we have against the government until this matter is resolved. Now, it is disappointing that it has come to this." Clooney also said the former Maldives leader was in remarkably good spirits during their meeting.
