National Zoo reveals name of baby panda

During a visit to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., the First Ladies of the U.S. and China reveal the name of the baby panda born there in August. Diane Hodges reports.

Officials at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. have revealed the name of the baby panda born there last month. The name was unveiled by U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan. Zoo officials say the name means "precious treasure." Madame Peng says the animals help to cement the friendship between the two countries. SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FIRST LADY, PENG LIYUAN, SAYING: "I expect and I am confident that the giant pandas will continue to serve as an important link between our peoples." The two ladies got some help from a group of kindergartners, who sang a song well-know in the U.S., although probably not in China. UPSOT OF SINGING: The name wasn't expected to be revealed until the cub turned 100 days old. The announcement was moved up to coincide with the visit by the two First Ladies. The guest of honor did not attend the ceremonies. The cub will be kept out of public view until January.
