Scorn, praise after Boehner resigns

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is both lauded and scorned, in the wake of his announcement that he's resigning from the Speaker's office and Congress. Diane Hodges reports.

SOUNDBITE: NANCY PELOSI, SAYING: "It's seismic for the House." That's the way former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi sums up the announcement from her successor that he was resigning. Speaker John Boehner says he made the announcement now to avoid a prolonged leadership battle. His decision comes one day after his historic meeting with Pope Francis. SOUNDBITE: BOEHNER SAYING: "The pope grabbed my left arm and said some very kind words to me about my commitment to kids and education. And the pope puts his arm around me and kind of pulls me to him and says, 'please pray for me.' Well, who am I to pray for the pope, but I did." The news brought praise from the head of the rival Democratic party.... SOUNDBITE: OBAMA, SAYING: "John Boehner is a good man. He's a patriot." But criticism from Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who says Boehner has compromised with Democrats too much. SOUNDBITE: TED CRUZ, SAYING: "After joining with the Democrats to implement all of President Obama's priorities. That is not the behavior one would expect of a Republican Speaker of the House." House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is expected to be the next one to wield the Speaker's gavel.
