Russia begins air strikes in Syria

Russia launched air strikes against targets in Syria on Wednesday in the Kremlin's biggest intervention in the Middle East in decades, telling the U.S. air force to steer clear while its warplanes are in action. A U.S. official says targets in the Homs area appear to have been struck. Diane Hodges has more.

(nats) Moscow says it launched the strikes against Islamic State in Syria after President Vladimir Putin secured his parliament's unanimous backing to intervene. The US says Moscow gave Washington just an hour's notice of the strikes, which set in motion Russia's biggest play in the region since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country will not send in ground troops, and that the military action will be temporary. A U.S.-led coalition has already been bombing Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, but Putin says a broader and more coordinated action is needed to defeat the militants.
