ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION A Palestinian woman stabbed an Israeli in Jerusalem's Old City on Wednesday (October 7) and was then shot and wounded by the injured man, Israeli police said. The incident came as Israel and the U.S.-backed administration of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sought to calm a surge in street violence linked to Muslim agitation over Jewish access to a contested shrine in the holy city. "A female terrorist stabbed a 35-year-old man who was injured lightly to moderately. He has been taken to the hospital inside Jerusalem. Immediately police units responded at the scene. The female terrorist was shot by the man who was stabbed. We're continuing to investigate the incident that took place, the attack, in the old city a few minutes ago," said Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld The Al Aqsa complex, revered by Jews as the vestige of their two ancient temples, has been the focus of Palestinian rancour given a rise in visits by Israelis. Palestinians fear an erosion of a decades-old arrangement guaranteeing exclusive Muslim prayer at the site. Israel says it is keeping the status quo. Four Israelis have been killed in stabbings in Jerusalem and a drive-by shooting in the occupied West Bank since Thursday (October 1). Two of the alleged Palestinian assailants were killed, and two other Palestinians have been shot dead in clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank since Sunday (October 4). Confrontations spread late on Tuesday (October 6) to Jaffa, a predominantly Arab neighbourhood of Tel Aviv, where three police officers were injured in stone-throwing and six protesters arrested.
