U.S. records show Pinochet complicity in assassination - Chilean senator

Recently declassified U.S. documents point to the role of Augusto Pinochet in ordering the 1976 murder of a Chilean politician in Washington, according to the victim's son. Nathan Frandino reports.

It was an assassination that shocked Washington, D.C. Chilean Orlando Letelier - living in exile - and a colleague killed in a car bombing. Almost 40 years later, his son Juan Pablo Letelier says recently declassified U.S. documents reveal who ordered the hit. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CHILEAN SENATOR AND SON OF FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER ORLANDO LETELIER WHO WAS ASSASSINATED DURING THE PINOCHET DICTATORSHIP, JUAN PABLO LETELIER, SAYING: "There was a CIA report with conclusive, convincing, information that Pinochet gave the order to Manuel Contreras to carry out an act of terrorism where Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffitt died." The older Letelier had served under the socialist president Salvador Allende. But after Augusto Pinochet's military coup in 1973, Letelier was imprisoned and tortured before fleeing to the U.S. The documents were delivered to Chile by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The files contain dozens of reports, which the younger Letelier hopes will uncover the truth behind the crime. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CHILEAN SENATOR AND SON OF FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER ORLANDO LETELIER WHO WAS ASSASSINATED DURING THE PINOCHET DICTATORSHIP, JUAN PABLO LETELIER, SAYING: "We think this will open a new phase in what Chileans have always needed, which is the truth of what happened in our country, with respect to the responsibility of particular people, some of which are dead, like in the case of General Pinochet, but also the responsibility of others who are alive can collaborate with these documents in order to help us come closer to the truth." About 3,000 people are estimated to have "disappeared" -- presumed killed by the military government -- during Pinochet's 17-year dictatorship.
