Russian helicopters firing over the western Syrian town of Kafr Nabuda, near Hama. Said to be some of the fiercest clashes in Syria in nearly a week. The Syrian army is pressing home an offensive against insurgents and Russian airpower is helping it make further advances. Russia has stepped up its ten-day-old bombing campaign, ostensibly targeting Islamic State but hitting other groups, too, as they battle Moscow's ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Dozens of insurgents are reported killed or wounded in Kafr Nabuda, as the Syrian army and allied Hezbollah fighters seize parts of the town. Not far off, Russian journalists embedded with government troops capture the fighting in a coastal village near the Turkish border. It's located in the province of Lattakia -- an Assad stronghold. Turkey, Arab powers and the United States support some of the very insurgents being hit by Russian air strikes, and so Moscow's military intervention has angered Assad's regional foes, including Turkey and most Arab countries. IF government forces do capture Kafr Nabuda, they'd come that much closer to insurgent-held positions along the country's main highway which links all of Syria's major cities. European leaders meanwhile are looking on with alarm...Russia's intervention adding another dimension to Syria's intractable and deadly civil war.
