ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION). STORY Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson in New Hampshire on Friday clarified statements he made Thursday that appeared to liken refugees fleeing violence in Syria to "rabid dogs," saying he was referring to "radical Jihadists." "What I actually said is that if you had a kid, and you knew there was a rabid dog outside, you probably, even through you love dogs, would bring that kid in, call the Humane Society make sure that dog was off the street before you sent your kid out there," Carson said. "The point being, there are people who are radical Jihadists and they want to destroy us," he added. "And we don't want to expose our people to those, even though we may love all the other people from Syria, if they incorporate some of these radical Jihadists who want to destroy us we have to first use our brain." He added that there needs to be "appropriate" screening before people come to the United States, adding that "we can create 'safe zones' over there." He also said, "We need to be working on a ceasefire in Syria, and I believe we would be smart to be working on establishing a coalition government there because you are not going to get one faction or the other faction in control without a great deal of strife, but you might be able to form a coalition government." On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives, defying a veto threat by Obama, overwhelmingly passed Republican-backed legislation to intensify security screenings of Syrian refugees and suspend the program to admit 10,000.
