Convicted Israeli spy released from prison

Jonathan Pollard, who was convicted of spying for Israel while working for the U.S. Navy, has been released from prison, and appeared at a courthouse in New York. Diane Hodges reports.

Convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard was released from a federal prison in North Carolina overnight, although there was no fanfare and no way of knowing which vehicle carried him to freedom. Pollard was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in 1987 of passing classified information to Israel while he was working as a US Navy analyst. Pollard's crime and conviction has been the source of tension between Washington and Jerusalem for decades. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, says his release has been a long time coming. 1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, SAYING: "The people of Israel welcome the release of Jonathan Pollard, as someone who raised his case before successive U.S. presidents many times, I longed for this day and now after three long and difficult decades Jonathan is being released. I wish him on his first Sabbath that he will spend with his family a lot of joy, a lot of happiness, a lot of peace. May these be the hallmarks of the rest of his life." Having been granted Israeli citizenship while in prison, the now 60-year-old says he wants to immigrate to Israel where his second wife lives. ..although under the terms of his parole, Pollard must stay in the U.S. for the next five years.
