Russia launches massive strikes in Syria. The intense campaign comes as Moscow confirmed reports that Islamic State the was responsible for downing a plane full of Russian tourists over Sinai in Egypt, killing all 224 aboard. As Putin checks in military officials he offers thanks -- but adds that the campaign is far from over. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "I want to thank all of you. But I want to stress that for now it is not enough to cleanse Syria of rebels and terrorists and to protect Russians from possible terrorist attacks. We face a lot of work and I hope that the next phases will be conducted at the same high level, just as professionally, and will produce the results we've come to expect." Russia began strikes in Syria in September saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Russia has contended that its main target was Islamic State, but it has been accused of hitting other targets, including territory occupied by Western-backed rebels.
