The fate of Chavismo hangs in the balance, as Venezuelans prepare to go to the polls Sunday for parliamentary elections. Early signs indicate that a punishing recession may rock the ruling Socialists and propel an optimistic opposition to its first legislative majority in 16 years. At a school in Caracas, electoral workers are finishing up training ahead of election day. Ballots and electoral material have been distributed across the country. National Electoral Council member Antonio Jose Vivas says the workers will be ready. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ANTONIO JOSE VIVAS, NATIONAL ELECTORAL COUNCIL (CNE) MEMBER, SAYING: "We sign their credentials so that tomorrow when they enter the voting centers, they're properly accredited with their identification card. We explain everything they have to do tomorrow." The Socialists' Chavismo movement is facing public ire over shortages of goods and the world's worst inflation under President Nicolas Maduro. If the opposition coalition wins a majority in the 167-seat National Assembly, it hopes to tackle what it deems mismanagement, corruption and authoritarianism during the Socialists' nearly 17-year rule.
