ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan sharply criticized Donald Trump on Tuesday (December 08), saying the suggestion of the leading Republican presidential candidate that Muslims be barred from the United States was an affront to the Constitution and to the ideals of the Republican Party. "Normally, I do not comment on what's going on in the presidential election. I will take an exception today: this is not conservatism. What was proposed yesterday is not what this party stands for and, more importantly, it is not what this country stands for," Ryan said following a meeting of the House Republican leadership. Trump's proposal to implement wide restrictions on the movement of Muslims seeking to enter the U.S, as well as government surveillance of mosques and of Muslims already in the country, was the most dramatic response by a presidential candidate to the San Bernardino, California, rampage, even as other Republicans have called for a suspension to U.S. President Barack Obama's plan to allow 10,000 refugees from Syria into the U.S..
