ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION). STORY: Christmas celebrations were in full force around the globe ... from Pope Francis offering prayers for peace at the Vatican... to children donning ice skates at the Eiffel tower just weeks after Paris came under attack. In Washington, U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama was joined by 'First Dogs' Sunny and Bo at the Children's National Medical Center where they offered holiday support and cheer to patients. In Jordan, children of displaced Iraqi families were welcomed by Santa handing out gifts, while along the Finnish-Russian border Russian Father Frost and the Finnish 'Joulupukki' met as part of an annual tradition to exchange winter holiday greetings and gifts. In Sussex, England crowds in pubs were treated to a traditional seasonal offering, in the form of a Mummers Play. Dating back over a thousand years, 'mumming' offers the audience a glimpse of an old Christmas tradition. Ukrainian volunteers from the city of Lviv delivered Christmas spirit and presents to children from disadvantaged families and families of military serving in the country's armed conflict in the east. In Mexico City, residents gathered for the staging of the beloved local tradition of the Christmas play, known in Mexico as the "pastorela." For half a century, famed pastorelas in the Latin American country have delivered a yearly dose of mariachi music and laughter, retelling the story of the birth of Jesus with a Mexican twist. In Budapest, Hungary sweets manufacturers were struggling to keep up with demand in the holiday season. And the sweets along with Christmas fare and music was on full display at the traditional Christmas market in the city's central Vorosmarty Square. In the West Bank town of Bethlehem, revered by Christians as the birthplace of Jesus, last minute preparations were underway ahead of the arrival of pilgrims for Christmas celebrations. In Jordan, 100 budding ballet dancers got into the Christmas spirit by putting on a performance of 'The Nutcracker' to celebrate Christmas as well as the beauty of ballet. In Indonesia, a puppeteer in Java island used the fading art of shadow puppetry to spread the message of Christianity among children during the festive season. And in Taiwan, Christmas went 3-D as thousands of people gathered around a 3-D Christmas tree projection in New Taipei City. Just some of the sights and sounds of the holiday around the globe on this Christmas Eve.
